WHIPPING

Whipping is done by binding the end of ropes with twines to prevent it from fraying out. Principally, a whipping is used to prevent the rope from unlaying and destroying itself. Whipping is preferred to back splicing, which thickens the rope and prevents it from being reeved through block.
